Tour of Course Redesign
for Linn-Benton Community College |
Completed 8/2015
|
Project: This course was developed as part of a new online business track program for Linn-Benton Community College. The program is administered in a self-paced subscription-based format, rather than using term-bound courses. Faculty content specialists will be available to answer student questions and to grade work. The goal, however, was to build hands-off courses that required minimal maintenance and only occasional updating.
My Role: I was hired to bring more engagement and interactivity to the course. The course already had an established textbook and learning objectives, but I helped give it more structure as well as curate and develop additional content. Since this was the first course in the program, they really wanted to make sure it sparkled. I wrote and produced 12 module introduction videos, added a recurring character to serve as the course guide, curated additional pre-existing online resources, and built 12 interactive scenario-based assignments (one for each module). Results: When I was done, the course was transformed from a repetitive series of ‘read the text, take a quiz, read the text, complete a short answer assignment’ to a far more dynamic course utilizing a variety of media and infusing it with a greater degree of personality. The end result was a more engaging course that reinforced learning objectives across multiple channels and a variety of activities. It was designed to provide a consistent, predictable format without becoming too repetitive or boring. Unfortunately, I’m not aware of how students responded to the course, but it was well received by the program administrators prior to its launch.
